“On November 28, 2016, I stood in disbelief as reports of the wildfire’s devastation poured in,” Allen Robbins recalls. “By the end of the day, 2,402 homes and businesses were gone, leaving a scar on Sevier County we’ll never forget.” In this powerful presentation at the Pigeon Forge Chamber of Commerce, Allen Robbins, General Manager of Sevier County Electric System (SCES), offers a firsthand account of the chaos, danger, and courage during the 2016 Smoky Mountain wildfires. Only four months into his leadership role, Robbins faced the unimaginable—guiding his linemen into the heart of the inferno to restore power and clear paths for emergency responders. With downed power lines blocking escape routes and 90 MPH winds fueling the flames, his team became the unsung heroes, saving lives and ensuring firefighters had the water they needed to battle the blaze. “Embers were flying, homes were burning, and the winds made it impossible to see what lay ahead,” Robbins shares. “But my crew pressed on, leading terrified residents to safety and working under conditions no one could have prepared for.” Allen’s presentation details the moments of sheer grit and determination that turned SCES linemen into first responders for the first responders. Their efforts to restore power to the Gatlinburg Water Treatment Plant proved critical, as it provided water to fight the fires and save downtown Gatlinburg. Beyond the technical challenges, Robbins’ story highlights the humanity of the moment—linemen leading stranded or lost motorists by guiding them to drive directly behind the bucket trucks, ensuring their safe passage, often while risking their own lives. This presentation also shares the inspiration behind Robbins’ book, Trial By Fire, a moving tribute to his team’s heroism. Proceeds from the book are donated to Sevier County charities, helping the community rebuild and heal. Trial By Fire: Allen Robbins’ Firsthand Account of the 2016 Smoky Mountain Wildfires
At RBA Marketing, we believe that photography is not just about capturing a moment; it's about capturing every detail, nuance, and emotion that the scene evokes. To achieve this level of precision, especially in interior photography—whether residential or commercial—we employ a technique known as bracketing. For each photograph, we typically shoot a bracket of nine exposures. This approach allows us to create High Dynamic Range (HDR) images that are both compelling and realistic, representing the property with stunning accuracy. What is Bracketing? Bracketing in photography involves taking several shots of the same scene at different exposure levels. By adjusting the exposure settings between each shot, we can capture the full range of light and shadow within the scene. This technique is particularly useful in interior photography, where the contrast between bright windows and shadowed corners can be too extreme for a single exposure to handle effectively. Why Nine Exposures? At RBA Marketing, we typically shoot a bracket of nine exposures. This extensive range allows us to capture every possible detail, from the darkest shadows to the brightest highlights. By having such a broad range of exposures, we ensure that no detail is lost, no matter how subtle. This is crucial in interior photography, where the goal is to present the space in the best possible light—literally and figuratively. Creating HDR Photos Once we've captured our bracketed exposures, the next step is to merge them into a single HDR image. This process combines the best elements of each exposure, resulting in a photo rich in detail and color. The final HDR image offers a more realistic representation of the scene, closely resembling what the human eye perceives in real life. Merging Different HDR Settings with Flambient Editing To achieve the most accurate and aesthetically pleasing results, we often merge different HDR settings using an adapted Flambient Style of editing. This technique allows us to emphasize key features of the photo, blending the natural ambient light with strategic flash exposures. In the video you will see, Rich, our photographer, will demonstrate how he used this approach to bring out the warm tones shining through a glass block shower wall. This was done to provide a realistic impression of what your eye perceives compared to what may or may not be captured in any single HDR photo setting. Through the use of bracketing, HDR photography, and the adapted Flambient Style of editing, we ensure that every photo we produce is a true reflection of the beauty and uniqueness of the property. The Sevier County Electric System, a cornerstone of local infrastructure since 1984, originally supported 40,000 customers. Now, as our community rapidly grows, it’s crucial to expand and meet future demands. This expansion project ensures Sevier County remains robust and vibrant. My upbringing was pretty regular, in a classic blue-collar family. My mom worked as a secretary for a trucking company, while my dad owned a small construction business. He was incredibly hard-working, and I owe my strong work ethic to him. From my mom, I learned the lesson that with enough determination, I could achieve anything. Not long ago, I was creating content for our clients at Sensible Concrete Works LLC. It’s work I genuinely enjoy because it allows me to be both creative and helpful in promoting their services. The task at hand was to film the process of spreading gravel for concrete floors. On my way to the site, I was wondering how to make filming gravel interesting. But once I arrived, everything fell into place. My past experiences in construction, from my childhood and early adult years, came flooding back. These memories helped me create a piece that not only showcased the process but also connected deeply with my own personal history.
